What makes our milk the very best?
Desert Wind Farms milk is 100% grass-fed. We don’t ever feed grain. We never feed GMOs-- not to anything on our farm. They just don’t need it. Grass-fed milk is superior to conventional grain-fed milk. Why?
We have high cleanliness standards. From the beginning we know our milk will be sold raw and handle it as such.
At Desert Wind Farms our cows are treated with respect. They are allowed the opportunity to be cows. They graze and lounge in the pasture. They chew their cud. Sometimes they run and play. Our cows are easy-going and not high-strung or anxious. They are not beaten. We don’t even own a “hot stick.” Our girls have names, not just numbers. They have personalities. Some might say they are spoiled, and have an easy life, but it’s our job to make it that way. It’s our job to be stewards over them and make sure they are well-cared for and respected.
Our Jersey cows are healthy.
We are concerned about GMOs, and synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers. We don’t use them on our farm. We do our best to avoid buying feeds that have been grown using them. We try to buy our feeds directly from farmers, so we can know how they were grown and by what standards. We do use compost, manure, crop rotation, cover-crops and other methods to help our soils. We are even particular down to the soaps and cleaners we use. We couldn’t find a teat-dip that met our standards, so we make our own.
Desert Wind Farms has an open-door policy. We love for you to come out to the farm! It is a great learning opportunity for you and your friends or family. We don’t mind taking time out of our day to show you around. This means we have nothing to hide or be ashamed of.
We are a Family Farm. Desert Wind Farms is the sole source of income for our family. That takes real commitment. We buy as much as we can locally and support local buying groups, co-ops, farmers markets and more. We believe in the local food movement.
We love what we do. It’s hard work running a dairy. I think what makes it worth it is seeing and hearing the appreciation of our customers. This is why we love to sell it ourselves. This is why we have created a great little community of milk customers that have grown into our friends and family. We started selling milk in August 2011, and we look forward to continuing to sell it.
